What is WandrLust?

So why have we centred our first WandrLust marketing campaign around a giraffe-inspired Ordinals collection?

I’m Nic, a co-founder, with Murray (my husband), of WandrLust.

Without realising it, this process started when I was just two years old.

My mum and I lived in Nairobi, Kenya. She often shares stories of our time there—stories filled with adventure, the Masai tribes, and wild encounters. But one of her favourite memories was our visit to Giraffe Manor in Nairobi—an amazing guest house where giraffes are free to roam the grounds and interact with the guests. The memory is one I wish I could remember more clearly…..if only these special moments with my mum could have been etched in time forever!

While I was too young to remember it fully, that experience set a template in my brain, an association of love and connection with all wild animals, but especially for giraffes, because in a lot of ways, they remind me of me and how I want to live my life. Read on, I’ll explain why.

From a Small Village to a Global Community

A couple of years later, Mum and I moved to Tollerton, a small village in the UK where my grandparents lived. This is where I truly learned the importance of community. Growing up in a place where everyone knew each other, the phrase “It takes a village to raise a child” was not just a saying—it was a way of life. Parents took turns caring for all the kids in the village, and we spent our days on bikes, exploring the fields, and creating memories that shaped who we are today.

Fast forward to Australia in 2022, and Muz and I noticed how modern life—despite all the technological advances—had started isolating us and our children. The freedom to explore, connect, and experience life together was slipping away. That’s when we realised something had to change. If we couldn’t pass down the legacy of community, outdoor adventures, and shared experiences, future generations would lose out on something really special.

WandrLust: Reconnecting with What Truly Matters

WandrLust was born from a desire to bring people back to what truly matters: real-world experiences, outdoor adventures, and human connection.

So why Giraffes for the Ordinals Collection?
When brainstorming ideas for our Ordinals campaign, one thing was clear: animals had to play a central role.

This ties back to our origins. We started as Critterpedia, an app designed to instantly identify animals. While it gained global attention, our user research revealed something deeper—people craved more than just identification. They wanted a full, holistic outdoor experience, to reconnect with nature, their families, and their communities.

From Critterpedia to WandrLust
Our research highlighted that people value these experiences because they serve as moments of connection with friends and family. So, the Critterpedia animal ID algorithm became just one part of a broader adventure toolkit, with tools that enhance the entire journey.

This led us to rebrand and evolve into WandrLust—a platform where adventures aren’t just experienced and shared but inscribed on-chain to live forever. This allows people to share their memories with a global community of like-minded, adventure-driven individuals.

Inscribing Memories Forever to Ordinals

As we transitioned WandrLust to the blockchain—making memories permanent—it became clear that launching an Ordinals collection was the next logical step. But which animal should represent the values of WandrLust?

The answer was simple: giraffes!

Giraffes stand for everything WandrLust represents—community, connection, loyalty, and exploration. As I said earlier, giraffes live the way I want to live.  They’re gentle, social animals, travelling together in herds, they have each other’s backs, respect each other, and they even take turns babysitting each other’s calves. 

That’s the kind of community we aim to nurture—one where people care for one another, support each other, and celebrate their adventures together. Just like we used to do, before social media shifted the focus away from authentic connection. We want to bring the attention back to nature and adventure—sharing real experiences instead of perfect selfies. We want nature and adventure to be the real influencers.

Population Decline and How Your Ordinal Contributes

Aside from the awesomeness of giraffes, they need our help. They are currently facing a quiet extinction crisis, with populations dropping by 36% to 40% over the past 30 years. As of 2015, there were an estimated 68,293 mature giraffes, which means adult individuals capable of reproduction. This figure reflects the significant decline from the 106,191 mature giraffes recorded in 1985. Because of this rapid drop, giraffes have been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2016.

Our GRFF Ordinals represent the four distinct species of giraffes, along with key subspecies, each characterised by a unique coat pattern. Every GRFF features one of eight distinctive patterns, representing the major giraffe types recognised by current research. Their distribution within the collection mirrors real-world giraffe populations.  For instance, only 1% of our collection features the coat pattern of the West African giraffe, as this subspecies accounts for just 1% of the total giraffe population in the wild.
