
We are moving quickly into a world of agentic AI, systems that don’t just recommend, but act. They book, navigate, and reward. They operate in your name without waiting to be asked twice. And the real battle in this space isn’t capability. Frankly, capability is no longer the hard problem. The hard problem is trust.
Because ‘smart’ is not the same as ‘safe, and ‘autonomous’ is not the same as ‘accountable.’ An agent that produces plausible-sounding outputs in a demo environment is a very different thing from one that operates reliably, transparently, and ethically inside someone’s daily life, navigating real decisions with real consequences. The gap between those two things is where most of the industry currently sits, and closing it requires something that controlled environments cannot provide, genuine real-world exposure.
This is why I keep coming back to a simple but consequential idea. Trust in agentic AI won’t be established in labs or at developer conferences. It will be won in the field, through repeatable, auditable outcomes, at scale, with real consumers who have real expectations. That kind of trust has to be earned the hard way, by showing up, by tracking reality accurately, and by rewarding what actually happened rather than what an algorithm claims happened.

Across the industry, conversations about ‘responsible AI’ tend to dissolve quickly into vague commitments and well-intentioned principles that are difficult to operationalise. Building agentic systems that people can genuinely trust requires six concrete things, and each of them matters:
A clear agentic framework: explicit rules, defined ownership, and clear accountability for every decision an agent makes or facilitates. Without this, you don’t have a trustworthy system; you have plausible deniability.
Interrogable models and solutions: the ability to understand how outputs are generated, to verify data quality, and to maintain meaningful human oversight rather than simply delegating to a black box.
Secure infrastructure: privacy-first architecture that protects users from misuse, data breaches, and threats to personal information, because systems that cannot protect their users cannot be trusted by them.
Active monitoring: ongoing performance tracking and the organisational capacity to respond quickly when agents fail or produce negative outcomes, because failure is inevitable and the response to it is what separates responsible operators from negligent ones.
And finally, compliance: legal and ethical standards enforced through genuine human control, not checkbox processes that exist to satisfy regulators while the actual system runs unchecked.

The shift that matters
The broader transition here is from the attention economy to the presence economy. For two decades, the dominant commercial logic of digital technology has been to capture and monetise human attention, clicks, impressions, engagement minutes, algorithmic stickiness.

The incentive structure was built entirely around keeping you on a screen, not around improving your life. Agentic AI risks inheriting and amplifying all of that, unless someone builds the commercial infrastructure to redirect it.
